The Ancient Art of Rune Reading
There are many forms of divination. There is the reading of Tarot Cards, Crystal Balls, Scrying, Astrology, speaking with Spirit Guides and Rune Reading and many others. Runes as we see them now are stones or pieces of wood inscribed with the Ancient Rune Alphabet. The Rune Alphabet or simply Runes were the older method of writing in Europe and the Nordic Isles before the Latin alphabet was born.
The story of the creation of the Runes was laid with magick. Legend says that Odin the Father God once went on a nine day journey in Yggdrasil, the tree of life and the universe. He then saw Runestones on the ground and tried to pick them up even though it pained him a lot. Once he grasped the Runes, the pain was released and the magic of the Runes belonged to him.
Each letter of the Runes has a magickal meaning connected to it. It either symbolizes change, joy, sorrow, good luck or bad luck. Back in those days, Shamans used runes to predict the future or read into the past. Runes can also be used for healing sicknesses and connecting with spirits. There are many different types of Runes since this letters evolved from region to region. The Runes that are widely known are Anglo-Saxon Futhorc Runes, Cirth Runes, Elder Futhark Runes, Younger Futhork Runes, Gothic Runes, Hungarian Runes and the Turkic Runes.
Ways of Reading the Runes
There are many ways of reading the Runes. Normally Runes are thrown from a pouch, drawn or laid out in a specific way. Each Rune have spiritual meanings that send out vibrations and energies to the reader. The first and most important thing is first connecting one’s self to the Runes and “blessing” them with your energies. Runes are best if they are made by the person who will use them because this imparts energies from the creator to the runes and gives them life and spirit. Wooden Runes are normally seen as the best since wood comes from trees. Trees are normally associated with the tree of life or the World Tree, the Yggdrasyl. Trees possess three levels of powers from them such as the roots going into the earth, the branches going into the sky, and the body in the mid-earth. On the other hand, smooth stone Runes often give spiritual clarity and freedom from energy and auric chaos.
Creating Runes
To create Runes, one must have the complete 24 symbols of the Runic Alphabet. The symbols are then carved into the wood or smooth stones. Then they are anointed with oil to bless them with energies coming from the person. Special paints or natural dyes can be used to make the markings visible. In the olden times, blood was used to mark the symbols to employ more power on the Runes. Up to this time, some still do use blood. Runes are then normally placed in a small sack. This sack can be made from natural material invoke more power from nature.
Drawing the Runes
The most basic method of Rune reading is the drawing of the Runes. Runes are placed in their small sack. The person who reads them normally concentrates on three things, the past, the present and the future. He would then shake the bag as he concentrates on his intentions. After this, he would draw out three runes, the first one is connected to the past, the second is with the present and the third one is with the future.
Casting of the Runes
The casting of the Runes is the most common method of Rune reading. The person throws out the Runes on a cloth or cushion on the ground. The ones that face up are to be read. They either relate to past, present or future questions that you may have.
In this method runes are spread out in a single line. They are first mixed in their bag before spreading them. Now the reader will use his or her none dominant hand and move towards that direction. He or she then concentrates on the question he needs answers for and then allows his vibrations connect with the Runes. He or she will sense when to stop. The Rune where he or she makes the stop will now be the answer to his question.
Precise Rune Layouts
Runes can be read much like tarot cards. They are laid out in different sequences to form a specific grid. One of the most common Rune Spreads is the Five Piece layout where the Runes are put in a diamond shape and one Rune would be in the center of the square. The central rune represents the current situation a person has. The Northern Rune is something that shows a matter that would help the person. The Southern Rune is associated with matters in that situation that cannot be changed or controlled. The Western Rune tells about the person’s past. Finally, the Eastern Rune says what will continue to happen if the person does not change anything in his or her life.

I found all the information in this article to be very helpful, I learned of runes back in the sixties and have used them as part of my spiritual journey. The way I personalized my runes was by collecting stones and painting the letters on them.. I sleep with the bag under my pillow and generally read them by choosing each from the bag they are in.. I gained so much more from your article about the history of reading runes and I thank you, I will read the article over and over until I have memorized the knowledge within it. Runes are much tarot cards, Each rune has a meaning, much like pulling out a card from a deck. Which rune reading did you get? Odin’s Rune reading or Three Rune Reading. You must “draw” the runes and make sense of the rule pulled out into your life. For example in my case I pulled out the rune “Isa” which means standstill in Odin’s Rune. It says things are not moving now. This is true for me because I recently got sick and have take to take some time off instead of working too hard.
Try getting a book by Ralph Blum about the meaning of the runes. It’s pretty detailed. You can get it on Amazon.com
I did a 3 stone reading regarding my success as a writer. I am just starting out and I am having trouble believing in myself. I tend to procrastinate. It was amazing how the rune stones addressed this issue. They reminded me that even though things are at a standstill, a stand still precedes the birth of a new reality. Unfortunately most rune readings do not state an exact date. You can ask about a date and see if the runes gives you answers for that date. However, they do not give exact dates because many times the future shifts. The occurrences that are to happen will happen but the dates may change.

Hang in there. I know all too well about a broken heart. Mine has been broken several times. I am about to embark on a new relationship with a wonderful man named Dan. I asked a question about a man in my life who started out as a professional colleague at first. I have been using this site for a couple of weeks. It is uncannily accurate. Every question I have asked has been answered 99% accurately, with 3 stone spreads or Celtic cross spreads.
